The Soldier and the Arches by tomsymonds The Soldier and the Arches by tomsymonds
Digipainting, about 8 hours total. About American forces clearing out Holy sites in the Cradel of Civilization. This is set in the near future. I'm attempting to achieve space and volume in a digipainting. the piece is for my Advanced Illusionism Class with susan Waters Eller at The Maryland Institute College of art, where i am a senior working on his thesis.

Hey dude, awesome artwork but if you're really going for the 'modern soldier in an ancient place' look, I suggest setting this guy up where there is some sorta comparison and interaction with the environment. For instance; a decrepit mosque or church with him touching something symbolistic like a cross or drawing on the wall would work well. Or even him in an old cave with cave men drawings of warriors.

Again, awesome art dude.

thanks Trooper, its probably time I revisit this series.  I can't believe it's been over 10 years since I drew that, it was at the beginning of the war in iraq.

You should have drawn the extended barrel on the grenade launcher of the XM29. Artistically, it looks much better with the longer barrel on the top (more balanced). Functionally, it would also allow higher velocity for the grenade :) [link] some of these have the longer barrel
Something about his helmet seems strange to me, too.

haha, you're a gun nerd. Thanks for the comment though.
Honestly though, i thought the bottom barrel does come out a bit longer because the grenade launcher sits on top and its barrel is the full length of the rifle underneath. Check out this link:

And the helmet i just kinda made up. It may be proportionally a bit small, but i did that so he would look like a bigger guy. I had a deadline for creating this image and i was thinking it was more important to create the idea of a modern soldier in an ancient place than to fully render all the details perfectly. That being said, i also love drawing detail, and maybe someday with more time i could go back to this image and rework it to be perfect. Till then, well.... doodles, and work i guess. =)

and again, thanks for the comment.
